Scoping Review Male Suicide Prevention (PHW)
The review will be conducted by researchers at CFMHAS. This research centre was established in 2012, and it is currently led by Rob Poole, Professor of Social Psychiatry and Peter Huxley, Professor of Mental Health Research. CFMHAS focuses on research that has a direct application to improve the mental well-being of the general population or to improve mental health care. We investigate complex problems that are often best addressed through combined qualitative and quantitative research methods.
This proposed scoping review will follow the JBI guidance for scoping reviews. It will accordingly adopt a systematic approach to the literature and available evidence base without exclusion criteria relating to study quality. However, studies of relevance will be assessed for quality, using criteria relating to rigour, method, setting, and generalisability. The review will also map out what prevention strategies are currently available aimed at intervening with male suicide, with particular reference to Wales. The review will start with a review of reviews on male suicide and, on the basis of the findings, then search the published literature on salient topics using standard research search engines. There will also be a search of the grey literature. There will be an on-line search for suicide prevention initiatives aimed at men in the UK, supplemented by searches through academic and clinical links with third sector service providers such as the Samaritans, and service user organisations such as the National Centre for Mental Health’s Partnership In Research group (PÂR-NCMH). Findings will be collated, analysed, and presented as a full written report, with recommendations, including those for further research and evaluation of current and proposed prevention strategies. The report will include an executive summary in lay language. The research group will also make oral presentations of findings and recommendations to Public Health Wales and other policy making forums as requested.
