Trosolwg

Arlunydd, gwneuthurwr ffilmiau ac ymchwilydd academaidd yw Karen Heald.  Mae ei gwaith celf wedi datblygu drwy weithio ar safleoedd penodol ac ar gyfnodau preswyl rhyngwladol. Mae'n cydweithio llawer iawn ag ymarferwyr amrywiol, fel arlunwyr, gwyddonwyr/meddygon a nifer o academyddion eraill. Mae'n Gymrawd Ymchwil Anrhydeddus yn Ysgol Gwyddorau Cymdeithas Prifysgol Bangor (2012-2015) ac yn Ymchwilydd/Arlunydd Preswyl Anrhydeddus yn adran seiciatrig Bwrdd Iechyd Prifysgol Betsi Cadwaladr (2011-2014). Yn 2012 daeth yn aelod o fwrdd y Northern Arts and Science Network. Roedd ei hymchwil gyda Contemporary Fine Art Practice Group, Prifysgol Salford (2009-2012), yn canolbwyntio ar naratif, deallusrwydd synhwyraidd a dysgu cinesthetig drwy fframweithiau creadigol. Mae'r cysyniad o fod rhwng dwy stôl yn ei doethuriaeth yn ystyried amser a chreadigedd a'i berthynas â fideo, penodolrwydd safleoedd a chymhlethdodau cydweithio ym meysydd y celfyddydau a'r gwyddorau. Drwy gyfrwng amrywiaeth o gyfryngau, yn bennaf fideo/gosodwaith a ffotograffiaeth, mae wedi datblygu ei hiaith weledol farddonol ei hun, sy'n ymwneud â'r gwahaniaethau a'r tebygolrwydd rhwng paentio a ffilm, gan greu iaith "breuddwyd arlunyddol" sy'n cysylltu materion cymdeithasol cymhleth â phenillion gweledol sy'n gynnil a gogwyddol.

Mae gan Karen ddoethuriaeth yn seiliedig ar ymarfer a MA mewn Celfyddyd Gain Gyfoes o Brifysgol Leeds Beckett a BA (Anrh) mewn Celfyddyd Weledol o Brifysgol Salford.

Funding & Recognition by Research Councils

2014 Arts Council Wales (ACW) Welsh Women Project (£4,178) funding awarded for Bird-Jones & Heald to edit and create an art film in response to the Women’s International Glass Workshop (WISGW) in France, 2014.

2014 Wales Arts International (WAI) International Opportunities Fund (IOF) for Bird-Jones & Heald to participate in the Women’s International Glass Workshop (WISGW), touring France in 2014.

2012 Touring Exhibition Fund (£20,000) from the University of Bangor to stage a touring exhibition of the artwork from the In-Between-ness project, sourced by Dr Richard Tranter following an application for exhibition funds from Karen Heald.

2010-2013 Research and Development award (£6,000) from the North Wales Research Committee to carry out a pilot scheme entitled In-between-ness: Using art to capture changes to the self during antidepressant treatment. This qualitative study used a variety of media and guidance from professional artists to capture changes in emotional perceptions, personal authenticity and the process of recovery during treatment with antidepressant medication. Lead applicant Karen Heald, co-applicants Dr Susan Liggett, Dr Richard Tranter & Professor Rob Poole.

2010 Research and Development award (£5,000) from the Arts Council of Wales & Safle to work with Dr Richard Tranter to develop the In-between-ness project. This followed the Artist Residency at Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board formally Glan Clwyd Hospital, Bodelwyddan, Wales, Karen Heald.

2009-2010 Recipient of the Stiwdio Safle Award (£18, 275) received from Safle and the Arts Council Wales for a nine-month Artist Residency at Glan Clwyd Hospital, Bodelwyddan, Wales, Karen Heald.

2009-2012 AHRC Arts & Humanities Research Council award (£286, 410) part of a research team on a 3-year funded Knowledge Transfer Fellowship at the University of Salford. The role included working with Principle Investigator Professor Paul Haywood on writing the bid, theoretical evaluation of the project and the final report of the research. 2012: Adain Avion Film screening as part of the UK-wide London 2012 Festival and Wales’ major contribution to the Cultural Olympiad.
